Imitrex is a prescription drug used for the treatment of migraine headaches once they start. The drug does not help prevent migraines. A migraine occurs when some of the blood vessels in the head become dilated. This medication works by narrowing these blood vessels, helping return them to their normal state. Tingling, dizziness, and chest discomfort are a few common side effects of this drug. Imitrex — which comes in a tablet form, a nasal spray, and an injection — should be taken only during a migraine, not on a regular basis.

Imitrex^® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication that is used to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex will not help to prevent migraines, but it can help to treat a migraine that is already occurring. The injectable form of the drug is also approved for the acute treatment of cluster headaches.

How Imitrex Works

A migraine is caused, at least in part, by the dilation (widening) of certain blood vessels in the brain. Serotonin, which is also called 5-hydroxytryptamine, is a neurotransmitter that constricts blood vessels. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that send messages from one neuron (brain cell) to another, or from a neuron to a tissue (such as blood vessels). Imitrex is called a serotonin-agonist because it acts like serotonin, activating serotonin receptors on the blood vessels. Activation of these receptors constricts the blood vessels which relieves the pain of migraines. Imitrex also reduces substances in the body that can trigger headaches and relieve other migraine symptoms, including nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

Some considerations for people taking Imitrex include:

• Imitrex is not meant to be taken on a daily basis. Take Imitrex only when you have a migraine
• If your healthcare provider instructs you to do so, you may take a second dose of Imitrex if your migraine does not go away after the first dose. You must wait at least two hours after the first dose before taking a second dose of Imitrex tablets
• Do not take more than 200 mg of Imitrex tablets
• Your Imitrex dosage can be taken with or without food.
• If you are unsure about anything related to Imitrex or your Imitrex dosage, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Migraine is a specific type of headache. The pain is often an intense pulsing or throbbing in one area of the head. It is often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting.

Migraine can occur in both children and adults. It is three times more common in women than in men.

Types

Migraine with aura

Also known as classic migraine, these headaches are preceded by an aura, a visual disturbance that appears as flashing lights, zigzag lines (called fortification spectra, because they resemble the angular tops of forts) or a temporary loss of vision (scotoma). The phenomenon is striking, and many artists have depicted what it looks like (see video below). An aura may also include tingling in one arm or leg, and, rarely, weakness or trouble with speech.

Nearly a million Americans have cluster headaches, which are known for their extreme pain and their pattern of occurring in “clusters,” usually at the same time of the day for a number of weeks. This headache is often described as constant, deep, excruciating pain, and the pain is always located on one side of the head. They do not appear to be linked to hormones or foods, as migraines have. Treatment options include lifestyle changes and medications.
