There are a number of potential side effects of Imitrex, and heart problems are among the side effects that occur rarely. A few of these heart problems include a heart attack, changes in heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. This risk of heart problems is greater in people with a history of heart disease and in those with risk factors for heart disease. People with heart disease should not take Imitrex, and people with risk factors for heart disease should use the medication with caution.

An Overview of Imitrex and Heart Problems

Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex is part of a class of migraine medications known as 5-HT agonists (or more commonly just “triptans”).

As with any medicine, there are a number of side effects that can occur with Imitrex — and heart problems are one of them. For this reason, people with a history of heart problems should not take Imitrex. For those with risk factors for heart problems, Imitrex should be used with caution.

Heart Problems With Imitrex — What’s the Risk?

It is thought that heart problems with Imitrex occur because Imitrex can cause the blood vessels of the heart (known as coronary arteries) to spasm. This narrows the blood vessels and decreases the amount of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood that is able to get to the heart muscle.

In clinical studies that looked at both the benefits and risks of Imitrex, heart problems were seen in rare cases (less than 1 percent). The risk of heart problems was greater, however, in those with a history of heart disease or those with risk factors for heart disease. Heart problems were often quite serious and, in some cases, even resulted in loss of life. Heart problems seen with Imitrex include:

A temporary lack of oxygen to the heart (myocardial ischemia)

A heart attack (myocardial infarction)

Changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmia)

The heart stopping (cardiac arrest).

Recommendations for Imitrex and Heart Problems

People with certain heart problems should not take Imitrex. This includes people with:

Coronary heart disease (more commonly referred to as just heart disease)

Stable angina

Unstable angina

Variant angina (also known as Prinzmetal’s angina).

People with a history of a heart attack, stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA or “mini-stroke”) also should not take Imitrex.

People with possible risk factors for heart disease should use Imitrex with caution. In fact, you should be evaluated for heart disease before taking Imitrex if you have heart disease risk factors such as:

High blood pressure (hypertension)

High cholesterol

Diabetes

Obesity

Smoking

A family history of heart disease

Being a man over the age of 40

Having gone through menopause.

If you have any of the risk factors for heart disease mentioned above, it is also strongly recommended that you take your first dose of Imitrex in your healthcare provider’s office (so that he or she can monitor your heart).

Finally, anyone taking Imitrex should call his or her healthcare provider or 911 right away if any possible symptoms of a heart attack (such as chest pain, chest tightness, or shortness of breath) occur.

If you are using the nasal spray, the Imitrex dose is 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg sprayed into one nostril. The usual Imitrex dosage for those receiving the drug through an injection is 4 mg or 6 mg injected subcutaneously (just below the skin). Talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist if you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or Imitrex dosing in general.

An Overview of Imitrex Dosing

The dose of Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

Your response to Imitrex

Other medical conditions you may have

Other medications you may be currently taking.

As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Imitrex Dosage for Migraine Headaches

Imitrex is meant to be taken only during a migraine. The usual dosages of Imitrex for migraine headaches are:

Imitrex tablets — 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg by mouth.

Imitrex Nasal Spray — 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg sprayed into one nostril. Since Imitrex Nasal Spray does not come in a 10 mg strength, use two of the 5 mg sprays (one in each nostril) to get a 10 mg dose.

Imitrex Injection — 4 mg or 6 mg injected subcutaneously (just below the skin).

General Imitrex Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking Imitrex include:

Imitrex is not meant to be taken on a daily basis. Take Imitrex only when you have a migraine.

If your healthcare provider instructs you to do so, you may take a second dose of Imitrex if your migraine does not go away after the first dose. You must wait at least two hours after the first dose before taking a second dose of Imitrex tablets or Imitrex Nasal Spray. For Imitrex Injection, a second dose can be given as soon as one hour after the first dose.

Do not take more than 200 mg of Imitrex tablets, 40 mg of Imitrex Nasal Spray, or 12 mg of Imitrex Injection in one day.

Your Imitrex dosage can be taken with or without food.

Imitrex Nasal Spray and Imitrex Injection both come with pamphlets containing detailed instructions for use. Make sure your healthcare provider demonstrates exactly how to use both of these forms of the medicine.

For Imitrex to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Imitrex will not work if you take it in a way other than how your healthcare provider prescribed it.

If you are unsure about anything related to Imitrex or your Imitrex dosage, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Some people may wonder, “Is Imitrex safe during pregnancy?” The FDA has classified Imitrex as a pregnancy Category C medication, meaning that the drug may not be safe to take during pregnancy. Imitrex and pregnancy have not been tested together in humans, so the drug’s possible effects on an unborn child are unknown. However, Imitrex did cause problems to fetuses in previous animal studies.

An Overview of Imitrex and Pregnancy

For people who are pregnant, Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) may not be safe. This is based on animal studies that looked at the effects of Imitrex during pregnancy.

Imitrex and Pregnancy Category C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans, but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Imitrex was given a pregnancy Category C rating based on studies in pregnant animals. For example, when Imitrex was given to pregnant rabbits during early pregnancy, there was an increase in deaths of the developing embryo. This risk was not seen when Imitrex was tested on rats. There were, however, an increased number of blood vessel problems in the studies on rats.

It is important to note, however, that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that its benefits outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.

Recommendations for Imitrex and Pregnancy

Prior to taking Imitrex, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant. Your healthcare provider will consider both the benefits and the risks of taking Imitrex during pregnancy before making a recommendation for your particular situation.

Many people experience migraine relief when taking Imitrex. The drug, which is available in tablet, nasal spray, or injectable form, works by narrowing blood vessels believed to become dilated during a migraine. When returned to their normal state, migraine symptoms often improve. Although the medication can be taken once a migraine starts, it cannot be taken to prevent migraines.

An Overview of Migraines and Imitrex

Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription drug used for the treatment of migraine headaches once they start. The drug does not help prevent migraines.

A migraine headache is a severe, intense, throbbing pain felt on one, and sometimes both, sides of the head. The pain is mostly in the front around the temples or behind one eye or ear. Besides pain, other migraine symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine pain can last a few hours or up to one or two days.

Migraine research scientists do not know the specific cause of migraines (see Migraine Causes), although they believe that overly sensitive blood vessels may play a role.

Treatment options for migraine relief will depend on a number of factors, including their severity and frequency. For some people, over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophenTylenol®) or prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) may be effective. For other people, stronger migraine medications are needed. One option is Imitrex.

How Does Imitrex Work to Treat Migraine Headaches?

Imitrex is part of a class of medications called 5-HT agonists (or more commonly known as “triptans”). During a migraine headache, some of the blood vessels in the head can become dilated (wider than they usually are). Imitrex works by narrowing these blood vessels, helping them return to their normal state. This action helps to relieve migraine symptoms.

Imitrex should be taken as soon as possible once a migraine starts. If your headache comes back or does not go away, you may take a second dose of Imitrex after waiting at least two hours from the time you took the first dose of Imitrex tablets or Imitrex nasal spray (or one hour after the first dose of an Imitrex injection). Let your healthcare provider know if Imitrex does not work completely after one dose.

Effects of Imitrex on Migraine Pain

In one study, 52 to 62 percent of people with migraines had no (or mild) pain within two hours of taking Imitrex tablets, compared to only 27 percent who did not take Imitrex. Within four hours, as many as 79 percent of people who had taken the drug had migraine relief, compared to just 38 percent of people not taking Imitrex. Similar results were seen in studies of Imitrex nasal spray and Imitrex injection.

Final Thoughts

Imitrex is a prescription medicine used for treating migraines. It does not prevent migraines from occurring (see Migraine Prevention). Although the drug is quite effective in treating migraine headaches, it is not right for everyone (see Imitrex Warnings and Precautions). It can also cause side effects in some people, such as tingling, dizziness, and chest discomfort.

Lifestyle changes and medications can be among these Imitrex alternatives. Some examples of lifestyle changes that may improve migraines include getting regular exercise, receiving biofeedback for migraines, and preventing migraine triggers (which include certain foods or stressful situations). Triptans and ergot medications are among the alternative drugs sometimes used to treat migraines.

Alternatives to Imitrex: An Overview

There are several alternatives to Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) for the treatment of migraine headaches. These Imitrex alternatives include lifestyle changes and other migraine medications.

Lifestyle Changes

For many people, lifestyle changes help improve their migraine headaches. Preventing migraine triggers, such as certain foods or stressful situations, can help improve migraines (see Migraine Diet for more information). Biofeedback for migraines can also be helpful. Regular exercise can also help improve migraine symptoms.

Medications

There are basically two types of migraine medications: those used to treat migraine headaches that have already started and those used to prevent them from starting in the first place. Some medications for treating migraines that have already started include:

Triptans (other migraine medications very similar to Imitrex)

Ergot medications, such as:

Other pain medications, including narcotics or over-the-counter medications for pain.

If migraines occur frequently or are extremely severe, medication for migraine prevention is an option. Some of the medications used to prevent migraines include:

Propranolol (Inderal®) and other beta blockers

Divalproex (Depakote®), topiramate (Topamax®), and other seizure medications

Verapamil (Calan®, Verelan®) and other calcium channel blockers.

Imitrex Alternatives: A Summary

There are several alternatives to Imitrex, including other medications and lifestyle changes. Talk with your healthcare provider if Imitrex is not working for you or if you are experiencing bothersome Imitrex side effects. You may need to try one of the other migraine headache treatments.

Smoke

Have a family history of heart disease

Have gone through menopause.

Also tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Imitrex Warnings and Precautions: Summary

There are several situations in which Imitrex should not be taken, as well as a number of precautions and warnings people should be aware of with Imitrex. However, it is possible that not all of the warnings or precautions for Imitrex were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider about the Imitrex precautions and/or warnings that may apply to you.

Imitrex is used to relieve the symptoms of a migraine headache once it has started. The medicine is not, however, effective at preventing migraines from occurring. Imitrex works by narrowing blood vessels of the head that become dilated during a migraine headache. “Off-label” Imitrex uses include the treatment of cluster headaches. Imitrex has not been adequately studied in people less than 18 years of age.

What Is Imitrex Used For?

Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. The injectable form of Imitrex is also approved for the acute treatment of cluster headache (see Cluster Headache Treatment).

Using Imitrex for Migraines

Migraine headaches are different from other headaches in many ways. Some of the most common migraine symptoms include:

Headache pain on one side of the head

Sensitivity to light or sound

Throbbing headache pain

Upset stomach (nausea) and vomiting

Unusual vision changes.

Some people may have an aura before their migraines occur. An aura can be any unusual sign that a migraine is about to happen, including vision changes, numbness, tingling, or speech changes. The most common type of aura is visual (seeing spots, tunnel vision, or other vision changes). Some people have migraine triggers, which are certain foods, drinks, or situations that seem to lead to a migraine (see Migraine Diet for more information).

Imitrex is approved for treating migraines with or without aura. Imitrex is part of a class of migraine medications called 5-HT agonists (or more commonly known as “triptans”). During a migraine headache, some of the blood vessels in the head become dilated (wider than they usually are). Imitrex works by narrowing these blood vessels, helping them return to their normal state. This action helps to relieve the symptoms of a migraine.

Because of the way it works, Imitrex will not help for migraine prevention. Imitrex is taken to lessen the pain and other symptoms of a migraine once it starts.

Imitrex Use in Children

Imitrex has not been adequately studied in people less than 18 years of age. Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Imitrex to treat migraines in children.

Off-Label Imitrex Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Imitrex for something other than the condition(s) discussed above. This is called an “off-label” use. At this time, one off-label Imitrex use (for Imitrex Nasal Spray and Imitrex Tablets) is the treatment of cluster headaches.

As with any medication, it is possible to overdose on Imitrex. Symptoms of an Imitrex overdose may include seizures, paralysis, or shakiness. Treating an Imitrex overdose could involve pumping the stomach or administering fluids through an intravenous line (IV). If you began treatment with Imitrex and overdosed, and/or believe you may have overdosed, seek medical attention immediately.

Imitrex Overdose: An Overview

Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat migraine headaches. As with all medicines, it is possible to take too much Imitrex. Effects of an Imitrex overdose will vary depending on a number of factors, including how much Imitrex was taken and whether it was taken with any other medicines, alcohol, and/or drugs.

If you happen to overdose on Imitrex, seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms of an Imitrex Overdose

In clinical studies conducted before Imitrex was approved, higher-than-usual doses of Imitrex did not result in any adverse reactions. However, there have been so few reported cases of an Imitrex overdose that the full effects are not known. Based on studies in animals, symptoms of an Imitrex overdose might include:

Seizures

Shakiness

Not being able to move or feel (paralysis)

Swelling in the arms or legs

Wide or dilated pupils

Increased saliva and watery eyes.

Treatment for an Imitrex Overdose

Given that there have been so few cases of people taking too much Imitrex, it is also not known what the best treatment is for an overdose on Imitrex. If an Imitrex overdose with tablets was recent, the healthcare provider may use certain medicines or place a tube into the stomach to “pump the stomach.” Treatment may also involve supportive care. This type of care consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. For example, supportive treatment options for an Imitrex overdose may include:

Fluids through an intravenous line (IV)

Other treatments based on the complications that occur.

If you began treatment with Imitrex and overdosed, and/or believe you may have overdosed, it is important that you seek medical attention immediately.

A few common side effects of Imitrex include chest tightness or pressure; dizziness; and abnormal sensations, such as tingles, warmth, or numbness. Side effects that you should report to your healthcare provider include shortness of breath; bloody diarrhea; or sudden, severe stomach pain. Decreased or increased blood pressure, breast tenderness, and asthma are rare, but can occur.

Imitrex Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate). However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If people do develop side effects, in most cases, they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Imitrex

Imitrex has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, with many people having been evaluated. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a “sugar pill” that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.

Based on these studies, the most common Imitrex side effects include:

Injection site reactions (including redness, pain, or swelling) — occurring in up to 59 percent of people who took the injected form

Abnormal sensations, including tingles, warmth or burning, pressure, tightness, or numbness — up to 42 percent

Bad or unusual taste in the mouth — up to 25 percent of people who took Imitrex Nasal Spray

Dizziness or a spinning sensation (vertigo) — up to 12 percent

Flushing (redness of the skin, especially the face) — up to 7 percent

Chest tightness or pressure — up to 5 percent

Weakness — up to 5 percent

Neck pain — up to 5 percent.

Other common side effects, occurring in 1 to 5 percent of people, include:

Ear, nose, or throat discomfort

Drowsiness

Muscle pain or cramps

Anxiety

Abdominal pain (stomach pain)

Difficulty swallowing

Jaw pain

Sweating

Decreased salivation

Drowsiness.

Final Thoughts on Side Effects of Imitrex

You may experience some or none of the Imitrex side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that “just does not seem right.” While it may not be a side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
