Imitrex and Heart Problems

There are a number of potential side effects of Imitrex, and heart problems are among the side effects that occur rarely. A few of these heart problems include a heart attack, changes in heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. This risk of heart problems is greater in people with a history of heart disease and in those with risk factors for heart disease. People with heart disease should not take Imitrex, and people with risk factors for heart disease should use the medication with caution.
An Overview of Imitrex and Heart Problems
Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex is part of a class of migraine medications known as 5-HT agonists (or more commonly just “triptans”).
As with any medicine, there are a number of side effects that can occur with Imitrex — and heart problems are one of them. For this reason, people with a history of heart problems should not take Imitrex. For those with risk factors for heart problems, Imitrex should be used with caution. (more…)
Imitrex Dosage

For migraine headaches, the usual dose of Imitrex tablets is 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg. If you are using the nasal spray, the Imitrex dose is 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg sprayed into one nostril. The usual Imitrex dosage for those receiving the drug through an injection is 4 mg or 6 mg injected subcutaneously (just below the skin). Talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist if you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or Imitrex dosing in general.
An Overview of Imitrex Dosing
The dose of Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your response to Imitrex
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking.

Is Imitrex Safe During Pregnancy?

Some people may wonder, “Is Imitrex safe during pregnancy?” The FDA has classified Imitrex as a pregnancy Category C medication, meaning that the drug may not be safe to take during pregnancy. Imitrex and pregnancy have not been tested together in humans, so the drug’s possible effects on an unborn child are unknown. However, Imitrex did cause problems to fetuses in previous animal studies.

For people who are pregnant, Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) may not be safe. This is based on animal studies that looked at the effects of Imitrex during pregnancy. (more…)
Imitrex for Migraines

Many people experience migraine relief when taking Imitrex. The drug, which is available in tablet, nasal spray, or injectable form, works by narrowing blood vessels believed to become dilated during a migraine. When returned to their normal state, migraine symptoms often improve. Although the medication can be taken once a migraine starts, it cannot be taken to prevent migraines.

Imitrex Alternatives

For the treatment of migraine headaches, there are a number of alternatives to Imitrex. Lifestyle changes and medications can be among these Imitrex alternatives. Some examples of lifestyle changes that may improve migraines include getting regular exercise, receiving biofeedback for migraines, and preventing migraine triggers (which include certain foods or stressful situations). Triptans and ergot medications are among the alternative drugs sometimes used to treat migraines.
Alternatives to Imitrex: An Overview
There are several alternatives to Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) for the treatment of migraine headaches. These Imitrex alternatives include lifestyle changes and other migraine medications.
Lifestyle Changes
For many people, lifestyle changes help improve their migraine headaches. Preventing migraine triggers, such as certain foods or stressful situations, can help improve migraines (see Migraine Diet for more information). Biofeedback for migraines can also be helpful. Generic Imitrex

At this time, generic Imitrex is available in four strengths. The generic versions are only available in tablet and injection form — it is unknown when a generic form of Imitrex nasal spray will be available.
Generic Imitrex: An Overview
Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat migraine headaches. It is part of a group of migraine medications known as 5-HT agonists (or more commonly called “triptans”).
Imitrex is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Generic versions of Imitrex tablets and injection are currently available. Generic Imitrex nasal spray is not yet available, and it is not clear when a generic version may be available. (more…)
Imitrex Warnings

A few of the conditions that you should let your healthcare provider know about before taking Imitrex include depression, epilepsy, and high blood pressure. Among the people who should not take Imitrex are those with a history of angina or heart disease. Some other Imitrex warnings and precautions include potential drug interactions, the risk of a heart attack or vision problems in some people who take Imitrex, and the safety of taking the medicine if you have risk factors for heart disease or are taking antidepressants.
Imitrex: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?
Prior to taking Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate), you should tell your healthcare provider if you have:
- Heart problems of any kind, especially a history of heart disease, angina, an irregular heart rhythm, or a heart attack
- A history of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA or “mini-stroke), or other bleeding in the brain (such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Certain blood vessel conditions, such as peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or Raynaud’s phenomenon
- Kidney problems, including kidney failure (renal failure)
- Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
- A history of seizures
- Epilepsy
- Depression
- Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives. (more…)
Imitrex Uses

Imitrex is used to relieve the symptoms of a migraine headache once it has started. The medicine is not, however, effective at preventing migraines from occurring. Imitrex works by narrowing blood vessels of the head that become dilated during a migraine headache. “Off-label” Imitrex uses include the treatment of cluster headaches. Imitrex has not been adequately studied in people less than 18 years of age.
What Is Imitrex Used For?
Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. The injectable form of Imitrex is also approved for the acute treatment of cluster headache (see Cluster Headache Treatment).
Migraine headaches are different from other headaches in many ways. Some of the most common migraine symptoms include:
- Headache pain on one side of the head
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Throbbing headache pain
- Upset stomach (nausea) and vomiting

Imitrex Overdose

As with any medication, it is possible to overdose on Imitrex. Symptoms of an Imitrex overdose may include seizures, paralysis, or shakiness. Treating an Imitrex overdose could involve pumping the stomach or administering fluids through an intravenous line (IV). If you began treatment with Imitrex and overdosed, and/or believe you may have overdosed, seek medical attention immediately.

Imitrex Side Effects

A few common side effects of Imitrex include chest tightness or pressure; dizziness; and abnormal sensations, such as tingles, warmth, or numbness. Side effects that you should report to your healthcare provider include shortness of breath; bloody diarrhea; or sudden, severe stomach pain. Decreased or increased blood pressure, breast tenderness, and asthma are rare, but can occur.
Imitrex Side Effects: An Introduction
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Imitrex® (sumatriptan succinate). However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If people do develop side effects, in most cases, they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. (more…)
